The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1 is truly extraordinary. Please do not compare nor expect a group just like Justice League or you would be sorely disappointed. Several fictional literary characters were grouped in this fantastic book. Very unlikely superheroes, the league includes Captain Nemo of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Mina Murray of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Dr. Hawley Griffin of Invisible Man, Allan Quartermain of King Solomon’s Mines and so many more. You might want to read the individual books that these various characters came from after reading this highly entertaining novel.
All the characters in the book have very interesting backgrounds which makes the plot even more interesting. One would not expect that these fictional characters would jive really well. Squabbles, fights and disagreements among the League adds juice to the story.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is set in a somewhat era of Victorian or Edwardian and the league has come together to be a part of one big adventure: to defeat a super villain blowing up a city. It is arousing and appealing in a unique kind of way. This book might be a bit dark and different but it is definitely a must-read.
